Street improvements at the top of St Michaels Hill.
The top of St Michael's Hill, (where Somerfield's is) is a busy local shopping area with many pubs and cafes. It is very close to 2 schools, the University, St Michaels hospital and 2 health centres. It is a main pedestrian and traffic route to the City Centre and has a relatively frequent bus route. The pavements are narrow here with not much room for the tables and chairs that make the street feel welcoming. The traffic can go quite fast throgh here making it dangerous for the numerous pedestrians and cyclists which use this route. The pavements and roads are tarmacced and pitted withnumerous past works. A traffic calming scheme and with high quality pedestrian and road surfaces is required to make this street really people friendly. A study is required first and money is needed for this.
Why the contribution is important
The inevitable study is required to produce options for environmental and street scene improvements. We are lucky that there have been no serious accidents here but there is great potential for this. I like having the tables and chairs on the pavements but this does seriously reduce the room for pedestrians, buggies and wheelchairs. It also means it is difficult to stop and chat to friends and neighbours because people passing by have to step into the road. Businesses and traders along here put out hanging baskets and we do have a street party every year so we are doing our bit to improve the area. Greatly improving the street environment will make the place look and feel good, encouraging neighbourliness, reducing traffic speeds and making it far more safe for all the users of the street.
