Street freedom

Enforce existing laws regarding parking on pavements and restrict parking to one side only on many streets. Introduce parking permits to reduce the number of cars parked in the city. Introduce traffic calming measures city wide. Make public transport a better choice for travellers than private cars.

Why the contribution is important

Many parts of Bristol are ruined by cars. I have friends and relatives who cannot move freely about the city because of cars. A neighbour uses a wheelchair: she cannot go out of her front gate sometimes because of cars parked on the pavement. I have a friend who has the same problem with her push chair. An old lady neighbour struggles to maintain her independence because she cannot get to the shops for cars parked on the pavement and because it is too dangerous to cross Gloucester Road. She often gives up and goes home. Children cannot play on the streets. Our youngest is too scared of traffic to ride his bike - at his age I used to ride long distances. My partner was nearly hit by someone mounting a pavement in order to park and then given lots of abuse when she complained. I could go on for pages about the fragmentation of local communities.

If you really want to improve the lot of the average Bristolian you would deal with the issue of traffic boldy and determinedly. A reduction in private car use would solve many of the city's problems. This kind of exercise is tokenism. If you really want to make a difference you will have to start leading instead of forming focus groups, running referenda and asking the population for ideas.

Here, here - our streets are infested with badly parked cars.

yes please, I'd like improved streets. I can't understand why we have come to let cars dominate our lives, and how we let drivers ignore the law whereas even MPs come in for heavy criticism when they break rules. Please enforce parking rules, speed rules and create streets geared to people.

Well said. There is far too much tolerance of this intolerable situation! This is a human rights issue. The ability of our children and elders to get about and access what they NEED to survive - play space, food, company - is seriously diminished by cars. It was said several decades ago that Britain prefers cars to children - how much more true is that today?

Please can we take this opportunity to provide a safer environment for us all to to enjoy. We're not allowed a resident's parking scheme, no-one brave enough in the Council to make that bold decision! Instead we're told that the Neighbourhood Partnerships would be route to take to tackle the (universally acknowledged) parking problems in our area. This is Neighbourhood Partnership money. Let's begin with yellow-lining ALL junctions, & sorting out the pavement parkers. Simples!

Yes, please do sort out this inbalance. Don't keep leaving it to get worse. Start by abolishing the car park behind the Council House and reclaiming that precious bit of land for green space. The trees are already there. Only that would focus the authorities' minds on providing proper public transport and restricting parking in our streets.

This is a laudable idea, much of which we are already trying to do (hence the Residents' Parking zone, and the like). Not sure how you would want the money spent on this though?
